SIDE CASING REPAIR AGAIN

For some reason this is unbelievably common – the drive bolt coming loose and coming through the side cover!

I’ve seen more than engine lugs been snapped off!

Those drive bolts need to be tightened correctly and always use a new spring if not sure how old it is!

This looks an easy job but it’s not.

Side covers for some reason are usually hard to weld, as soon as the torch goes near the casing holes appear, even with all the prep work needed to make a good job. Even when it welds you usually see little holes at the side of the weld. This happens even with new casings, so it’s not the oil soaked up over time in old casings.

Here’s a Series 2 type side cover, which has been ground away, welded, fettled and polished up to look original.
